William Cheeseman is the corporal seated on the far right of this photo on the back of which he had written to his wife:
'Dear Jin, Just a line hoping they find your's as well as it leaves me at present. Well dear these photos are my section
in the Trench Mortar battery and they are a fine lot of mates and we have some fun in our hut at night. My best to you.

The photo on the left was taken in Melbourne before William, who is seated on the left, embarked for overseas service.
Seated on his right is Sgt Stan Haggis (probably William's brother-in-law).
The photo on the right was taken sometime after January 1918. The person on William's right is Lieutenant William Brydie.
A former clerk from East Brunswick in Melbourne, Brydie embarked with William on the ASCANIUS in May 1916.
He was recommended for a Military Cross while serving with the 10th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery in France
and was awarded an MID in London on 11 July 1919. He RTA on 3 July 1919.
